经过一个多月的准备，学校终于同意了阿华等人的建议，在校园内开展一次有史以来的英语竞赛活动。根据要求，每个班级选出三人代表参加。班主任一发出竞赛通知，学生们可就热闹开了，他们争先恐后地报名，随时随地都可以看到说英语的学生，走廊的拐角处、室外的树荫下，三一群、俩一伙的说英语，背课文锻炼记忆的，真可谓热火朝天，把英语学习推向了一个小高潮。在这期间，无论是学习好的、还是学习差的，都在努力向前追赶。看到这样的情景，许多的老师被感动了，他们想不到学生们学习英语的热情积极性会这么高。

    阿华她们就利用了几个下午的课余时间，进行了英语竞赛。在会议室里，她们用英汉双语写了一个大标幅：慧美小学第一届英语竞赛Huimei School First Session English Competition.请来了校长和教导主任一起参加。开始，校长进行了简短的讲话，她说：“各位领导、老师和同学们，今天我们将在这里进行的是我校有史以来的第一次英语竞赛活动。通过这次活动，我们会把我校的英语学习推向高潮。这次会议的发起人是英语组的全体老师们，她们做了大量的准备工作，经过学校的同意，终于在这里举行了。我希望参赛的选手们都能够取得优异的成绩，最后祝大会圆满成功。”同学们热烈鼓掌，一是对学校给予的支持，二是为了给选手们鼓劲，三是为了他们能够有机会炫耀自己的才华。

    教导主任站起来说：“这次的竞赛评委由我们学校的英语老师担当，演讲内容不限，但不能超过3分钟，演讲后评委们要向选手提出几个问题，之后，评委们给出得分，去掉一个最高分、去掉一个最低分，然后综合起来就是你的最后得分。希望同学们获得好成绩。”又是一片掌声。

    主持人是一个高年级的小女孩，她宣布竞赛开始：“第一个演讲的同学是五年五班的阿宾同学，他演讲的题目是《My Family》大家欢迎！”

    阿宾同学从容地走上讲台，向贵宾席上的领导鞠了一躬，转过身来又向在座的老师和同学们鞠了一躬，然后就开始了他的演讲。

      I was born into a good and happy family.  There are 5 people in my family. Besides my parents I have a grandfather and a grandmother. We love each other and get along very well.

        We live in a flat of five rooms. Among them three are bedrooms. ()ne is a kitchen. One is a toilet. Two of the bedrooms face south. All the rooms are clean and neat.

         My father is an office worker.  My mother is a primary school teacher. They are very busy very day. My grandmother works very hard at home to make it pleasant.

          After supper, it is the happiest time in our family. We watch TV together and talk about what had happened this day.

          My family is a happy one. I love my family.

    台下一片掌声。主持人说：“现在由评委提问。”

    评委A：May I ask you some questions?

    阿宾： Yes. Of course!

    评委A：How many people are there in your family?

    阿宾：There are five people in my family.

    评委A： Who are they?

    阿宾：They are my parents and my grandparents.

    评委A：How do you get along?

    阿宾：We get along very well.

    评委A：What is your mother?

    阿宾：She is a teacher.

    评委A：What do you do after supper?

    阿宾： We watch TV and talk about something together.

    评委A：Good. I have no questions.

    主持人: 现在由评委们亮分.

    评委A：发音91分，评委B：语调93，评委C：表情90，评委D问答：94，评委E：流畅90.

    主持人：好。评委的分数已经出来，去掉一个最高分，去掉一个最低分，阿宾同学最后的得分是：91.3分。台下又是一片掌声。

    主持人：下面参赛的是五年三班的阿美同学，她的题目是：《My Father》，大家欢迎。

    阿美同学走上讲台，说：“Hello, everyone. This is my first time to speak before so many people. My topic is ‘My Father.’

     My father is a state cadre. He is a tall man with a pair of glasses. Everyone says he is a kind-hearted man. He often helps his comrades and some strangers whom he doesn’t know at all. He has really done a lot for others. I don’t like him to do so because I think it has taken him too much time. When I discourage him, he always says with a smile, ‘The world needs warm hearts.’ My father loves his work very much. In the company, he is called workaholic. He spends most of his time working, and often forgets to have meals or to go to bed. As a result, he doesn’t enjoy good health. My father likes reading in his spare time. He told me reading was very useful to me. I became interested in reading little by little. My father is a good one but he has a bad habit. He smokes a lot every day. I hate it very much. In fact, everyone hate it! I know it’s bad for his health as well as mothers and mine. I advise him to give up smoking. He wouldn’t listen. But I believe he will follow my advice some day. Such is my father. I am proud of having such a good father. 

    阿美同学演讲完后，深情地向在座的领导和学生们鞠了一躬，然后，站在那里准备接受评委们的问话。
